Background - Physiology
Human lungs possess a natural means for clearing lung secretions.
| Natural rhythmic 'beating' motion of cilia creates vibration between 15 and 25 Hz. |
 |
Frequency of oscillation induces mucus phase change from viscous to fluid. |
 |
| Mucus fluid can now be more easily moved by natural motion of cilia. |
 |
Mucus fluid expelled by coughing or swallowing. |
|

Patients with lung disease cannot create sufficient mucus clearance as a result of:
- Reduced mucociliary activity
- Excessive mucus production
- Excessive mucus thickness
Results:
- Lung congestion
- Discomfort
- Difficulty in breathing
- Reduced oxygenation
- Potential infection
COPD or other lung congestion patients often can only generate a pressure of 2.0 - 2.5 cm H2O.
