Background - Physiology

Human lungs possess a natural means for clearing lung secretions.

Natural rhythmic 'beating' motion of cilia creates vibration between 15 and 25 Hz.		Frequency of oscillation induces mucus phase change from viscous to fluid.
Mucus fluid can now be more easily moved by natural motion of cilia.		Mucus fluid expelled by coughing or swallowing.

Patients with lung disease cannot create sufficient mucus clearance as a result of:

• Reduced mucociliary activity
• Excessive mucus production
• Excessive mucus thickness

Results:

• Lung congestion
• Discomfort
• Difficulty in breathing
• Reduced oxygenation
• Potential infection

COPD or other lung congestion patients often can only generate a pressure of 2.0 - 2.5 cm H₂O.
